She lived with us for nearly a year and all I have left of her is one blurry photograph and a sense of sadness. Part of the sadness comes from knowing that only Denny and I will ever miss her and all that posterity will have is that one unfocused picture.
What her life was like before she showed up on our porch in December of 2004, I can only speculate. I doubt she was loved or well-treated, because in the months she lived under our roof, we only were able to touch her a handful of times. She was content to live on the fringe, like our other ferals, avoiding contact with us.
Now it is easy to blame myself for not pushing harder to befriend her. If we had been able to handle her more, we would have noticed the lumps around her leg and shoulder--maybe in time to do more for her. But at the time, she was safe and warm and well-fed. For a feral cat, that may have been heaven enough.
By the time her limping had grown pronounced enough for us to take action, the malignancy was inoperable. All we could do was let her go quickly and free her from her pain.
